Your Child's First Dental Visit: How to Make It a Positive Experience

The first dental visit is one of the most consequential appointments your child will ever have — not because of what happens clinically, but because of what it sets in motion emotionally. Children who have positive early dental experiences grow into adults who prioritise their oral health. Children who have frightening ones often spend decades avoiding the dentist.

As a parent, you have more influence over this outcome than you might think.

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that a child's first dental visit occur within 6 months of their first tooth erupting — or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. This might feel early, but the purpose of this visit is not to perform extensive treatment.

It is to:

• Examine the emerging teeth and gums for early signs of decay or developmental issues

• Assess bite development and jaw growth

• Give parents personalised guidance on brushing technique, diet, thumb-sucking, and pacifier use

• Establish a comfortable, familiar relationship with the dental team before any significant treatment is ever needed

Use positive, simple language. Talk about the visit in terms of "meeting the dentist" and "counting and cleaning your teeth." Avoid words like "hurt," "needle," "drill," or "pain" — even in a reassuring context ("it won't hurt"). Children process the negatively loaded words, not the reassurance.

Read books or watch videos. There are excellent children's books about first dental visits (Peppa Pig's Dentist Trip is a perennial favourite). Familiarity reduces anxiety.

Play pretend dentist at home. Count each other's teeth with a toothbrush. Let your child examine your mouth. Normalise the idea of someone looking in your mouth as something safe and ordinary.

Avoid scheduling around nap time. A tired, hungry child is a less adaptable child. Morning appointments when children are rested and fed tend to go more smoothly.

Do not share your own dental anxiety. Children are exquisitely attuned to parental emotion. If you are anxious about dentistry yourself, be mindful of the cues you send — verbal and non-verbal.

We begin by letting your child explore the environment — the chair, the light, the tools — at their own pace. We narrate everything we do before we do it ("I'm going to count your teeth with this little mirror — can you open like a crocodile?"). We use the "tell-show-do" approach universally endorsed in paediatric dental practice.

If a child is not ready to open their mouth on day one, that is entirely fine. Building trust is the work of the first visit, not completing a full examination at any cost.

We also spend time with you as a parent — reviewing what we saw, discussing home care technique specific to your child's age, and answering questions about diet, fluoride, thumb habits, and when to expect the next teeth to emerge.

Once your child has had their first visit, we recommend continuing on a 6-month schedule — the same as adults. This interval allows us to:

• Monitor the eruption sequence of baby and permanent teeth

• Apply fluoride varnish and sealants at the optimal times

• Catch early decay when treatment is minimal and non-traumatic

• Maintain the positive relationship your child has built with the dental team

Children who see the dentist regularly every 6 months almost universally report having no dental anxiety as adults. The relationship has simply been too long and too positive for fear to take root.
